MEET YOUR TEACHER!

Hi, my name is Sónia. I am Portuguese and I will be your teacher on your Portuguese language journey.

I started teaching at the age of 16 tutoring other young kids who were struggling with the Portuguese subject at school. In my early 20’s to the dismay of my parents, I quit a well-paid, steady job to start teaching Portuguese to non-native speakers. At the time, my family would have preferred me to have kept my job, for obvious reasons! However, I had to follow my own feelings and my own instinct. I was then living in the Palmela area, in the district of Setúbal and would drive 50 km back and forth to Quinta da Marinha, in Cascais, to teach only one family. That is a journey of 2 hours and the travel expenses would barely cover the money I made: not very clever, one could think! Yet, something has always kept pushing me to teach and recently I finally realised what it is!

TEACHING IS A NEED AND A PASSION THAT COMES FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART

For many years, I tried to avoid teaching, as a 9 to 5 job in a company would have made my parents much happier. However, for one reason or another, teaching has always ended up running into me. It is more than a job, it is a need and a passion that comes from the very bottom of my heart. I don’t just teach: I put my heart and my soul into a process that helps people find their way around the Portuguese language and overcome their struggles related to learning a language.

Through this journey, I have met many foreign families and I have taught in many companies. A highlight was when I had the amazing opportunity to teach Portuguese to all the foreign players of the main Benfica soccer team in Portugal. Everyone that I have taught have filled me with wonderful and very rewarding memories.

I love to help people and I realised that my profound passion for languages and for teaching is something that I need to pursue.

Being a high-achiever, I wanted to become a world-class teacher. So, I went back to university. I studied neuroscience to learn more about how the brain and the nervous system work in learning mode. I also obtained several certificates in coaching and I specialised as a language coach.

All my skills and experience allow me to provide this unique service of innovation and excellence.

I teach from the heart, with a true purpose of serving and a profound concern to always elevate my students to their highest performance.
